Firewise Program
The Pequawket Lake Preservation Association is Maine’s first lake association to achieve Firewise USA status! A program of the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), Firewise is managed locally by the Maine Forest Service and seeks to assist communities in the following goals:
Reduce loss of lives, property and resources to wildland fire
Maintain communities in a way that is compatible with our natural surroundings
The Firewise USA Sites approach emphasizes community responsibility and involvement

Each year before the start of summer, we work with the Maine Forest Service to offer “Chipping Days” to lake property owners. These “Chipping Days” consist of Maine Forest Service staff and PLPA volunteers loading brush and fallen tree limbs that have accumulated over the year into a wood chipper, removing the threat of wildfire tinder around lake homes.
Property owners are responsible for bringing their brush and tree limbs to the curb (cut side towards the road for easy loading) prior to the day of chipping. If you would like to volunteer for our next chipping day, please reach out! If you are a property owner wishing to get on the Chipping list, please fill out the form below and return to our Community Sponsor:
